Letter 23 - September 14th, 1845

Dearest Morella,

This afternoon Anthony’s horses and wagon were discovered within half a mile from Mardis Crossroads. What I cannot understand is that all of his valuables were seemingly abandoned, including twenty-five dollars in bank notes. Among the other items were clothing and several old muskets. Had my brother been robbed by a lowly bandit, none of his possessions would have remained; I believe this with my entire soul. Yet I am afraid to think where he might be. I shall write you further if we find anything else.

Yours always,
Burke
