Letter 16 - March 14th, 1859

Dear Fred and Lucy,

I am grateful for your letter of concern. What happened was undoubtedly shocking, but I have regained my composure since the worrisome events. Although my recollection is mostly vague, I do recall passing through the Blackstone Hillocks and something abruptly knocking me from my horse. In all likelihood this was but a tree branch, yet it felt as if someone had pulled me up before releasing me. What still unsettles my spirit is what I caught a glimpse of before losing consciousness. It was revolting and unnatural—whatever the thing was. Perhaps an hallucination? No matter, how fortunate I am that another traveler found me. Had he not, I may have very well perished in that valley all alone.

Yours truly,
E.M. Jamison
