Letter 13 - November 21st, 1837

Dear Matthew,

Mable’s illness has progressed since I last wrote you, and Dr. Davidson explained that I should expect the worst. I also fear that I might contract her malady. If this were to happen, I would send Cornelius to live with your family. Our misfortunes all seemed to begin when that terrible cat—‘Tobias’ they call him—arrived. I had hoped to dwell here undisturbed and in tranquility, yet this simple yearning could not be fulfilled. Perhaps I sound unreasonable, but I know Tobias is responsible for this. He prowls like an unwanted shade, haunting me and my wife each night. I fear for Cornelius. I fear for us all.

Yours, though forlorn,
Thomas
