Sept. 2012 The Phantom Hearse It was not long after the wanted mortician fled Hemlock that stories about a phantom hearse following stagecoaches and travelers on horseback spread across the region. Such accounts allege that this apparition materializes on overcast days when gray clouds scrape the mountains and ghostly mists hug the roads. Witnesses describe hearing the whickering of horses, before turning around to see a man with a gaunt, pallid face and shadowy top hat on the hearse’s seat—staring as he whipcracks the riding crop. Although no one has ever possessed enough courage to confront this specter, it is widely feared that approaching him may end in such daring souls having a funeral procession of their very own.
