Letter 4 - July 28th, 1843

Mine own Dove,

I am quite eager to visit Hemlock. I hear it is one of the most lovely towns in the whole of New England, with white picket fences and houses that are over a century old. Your descriptions always enchant me. I have also heard fantastical tales of a valley inhabited by spooks. How frightful yet exciting! It is a habit of mine to entertain these stories, for no such legends prevail where I live. But my imagination is wild. Do you believe them? How it will unburden my spirit when I am able to finally see you, too. I confess that my days grow more melancholy and I yearn for your company. Sometimes I feel like a wilted flower.

Love,
Abagail
