Letter 2 - September 13th, 1837

My dearest Mable,

I find myself slightly perturbed while writing this. I know not why, although I do suppose it is merely the isolation that is unnerving me so. The valley is awfully silent at night, except for the occasional wind that whistles through the trees. Sometimes the owls may hoot, yet their somber night-hymns are seldom sung. I wander this house mostly in darkness, pacing to and fro. Indeed, I should like the many rooms and chambers better with our furniture and rugs. And by daybreak this disquietude will surely subside.

Lovingly yours,
Thomas
