Journal Entry 18 - August 28th, 1843

There reigns nothing but hope and serenity in Hemlock. The rolling hillsides possess a lush green to which no place I have ever lived can compare. And how the countryside is pleasantly warm. The townsfolk—though quiet—are generous and friendly. William’s parents have arranged for me to dwell in their lovely cottage until William and I are married. Indeed, how I wish to spend the rest of my days here. The only shadow that lingers in this town is that of the valley everyone deems haunted. I believed they were merely tall-tales, but nearly everyone seems to insist the stories are true. William promised, in good humor, that he would take me to the vale to prove it is as peaceful as the rest of Hemlock.
