Lost Letters
Letter 88 - February 19th, 1883
Dear Rodger,
While I understand your reluctance to believe every folktale in Hemlock’s vicinity, I feel as though you are disregarding their relevance; moreover, it seems to me you are unfairly misconstruing my argument. I shall thus give a different and more proper illustration: A father tells his child imaginative tales about the forest being dark and dangerous. Perhaps there are trolls, sprites, witches, and hobgoblins. But does this child’s imagination lead him or her to madness? Do the fanciful elements of a cautionary fable make the truth any less sincere? Mankind, it appears, has always told stories for countless reasons, many of which possess a varying degree of reality. If we know it possible for a township to disappear, then we should warn our posterity of it.
My regards,
Greyson Hastings
