Letter 87 - June 18th, 1842

Mine own Dove,

I am without words. My heart beat wildly after I cut the wax seal, and I wept joyous tears upon reading your reply and poem. Never before has one so affectionately spied my heart, which I have kept hidden for fear of it being shattered. But your poetical sensibilities and insight proved too warm—too gracious—and too observant for what I have imprisoned to remain icy, dormant, and invisible. Mayhap, it is Providence that the gentleman who noticed me lingering in the gloom of the ballroom would, likewise, recognize the merit I have never seen in my own art. And I assure you, my ‘precious soul’ you do deserve, William! For I wish to, indeed, ‘take your hand forever.’

Love,
Abagail
