Lost Letters
Letter 77 - May 22nd, 1883
Dear Mr. Percy,
I am not in the least displeased by your explanation, and I’m all the more intrigued. Does the Hemlock Town Library have any of these volumes to which you allude? And should you have one, what is the title and date of publication? My anxious mind would be satisfied if I were to read how others interpret this legend. But let us suppose for a moment that this book of nursery rhymes was at one time fact and not fable. Why would the author wish to record these ‘horrific events’ through poetry and riddles? And how did he perish ‘unexpectedly?’ Might there be more to this tale? I hope you can forgive my wild suppositions. We may very well never know where this story began, but one can contemplate.
My regards,
Waldere Ashcroft
