Letter 64 - February 11th, 1883

Dear Greyson,

Whatever befell Hemlock over three decades ago is troubling, and although I concede that we have yet to determine the cause, delirious ramblings and conjectures will solve nothing. Does this mean I am not disquieted by this ominous mystery? Not in the least! But it must first be understood that ‘fear’ is a potent emotion. And when it is given dominion over one’s mind, the wildest phantasms are free to present themselves as indubitable fact. What, then, happens if one believes his imagination is real? He throws himself into the maelstrom of a self-fulfilling prophecy; a traveler hears stories, then rides through the valley into the gloom of his own madness—never to return!

Your most obedient servant,
Rodger A. Broomhall
