Letter 62 - January 29th, 1883

Dear Greyson,

I should hope that you, too, have not contracted the superstitious disease of Hemlock. The only good brought about by the past is reminding us of where senseless fancy and arbitrary ritual may lead one: into the abyss of lunacy and absurdity. ‘Ghosts’ frighten merely when we grant them authority over the present and future. But when we relinquish them, their chains of fear become no more. Reason is the only light that can burn away the darkness of the mind’s many illusions. It is true that there exist things which we cannot yet explain, but the unexplained need not be an invitation for our imaginations to conjure up an untruthful answer.

Your most obedient servant,
Rodger A. Broomhall
