Lost Letters
Letter 45 - October 23rd, 1878
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Haselden,
I appreciate your heartfelt words. It would be splendid if you and Stanley came to Hemlock. I believe you both will adore the small garden in the front of my home. And the white picket fence around the cottage is quite cozy. However, most of the houses in Hemlock have lost the New England enchantment they once held. I confess that this town has oppressed my spirit. Perhaps this is why I have grown far more withdrawn. Some days I pace around my cottage without end, in dismal contemplation. I feel as though I am already within the autumn of my own life.
With much love,
Luella
