Letter 40 - January 24th, 1883

Dear Rodger,

Your explanation is fascinating, though I had never heard of such legends before. It is curious how our distant ancestors feared many things that we now recognize as absurd and imaginary. Why do you suppose these phantasms seemed quite real to them? Was it purely because they were destitute of reason, or did they truly see things of which are now invisible to us? Perhaps I am now unreasonable for fancying such questions. Nevertheless, I do feel as though locking away the past within a box is foolish, for how will we recognize that with which we are confronted when it returns to haunt us?

My humble regards,
Greyson Hastings
