Letter 31 - August 20th, 1850

Dear Samuel,

It is indeed quite unexpected to receive a letter from you. Everyone believes you are either dead or a reprehensible deserter, and your mother and father would weep tears of joy if they knew you were alive. Yet I will keep your letter a secret. Although, whatever may be happening, you must tell me when I meet you at the tavern. I wish you had written to me sooner, for I would have always offered my assistance. Now it appears your foolish decisions have led you to whatever peril you now face. I shall listen to your story tomorrow, but I only seek the facts and nothing more.

My regards,
Brinley Gladwin
