Journal Entry 80 - June 11th, 1886 – 12:14 a.m. [Continued]

She paused for a moment, though I was unable to tell whether she forgot the rest of her little tale or if she were remembering something. ‘Many have said this is the valley’s insidious hand clutching on to one’s soul.’ Intriguingly, when I asked Mrs. Ramsey if she believed in her own narrative, she said, ‘Whatever truly inspired these fables is undoubtedly much scarier than the narratives themselves.’ I then asked, ‘Do you think General Edgeworth’s ghost still haunts Maple Hill?’ I found her response to be quite vague: ‘Something does.’ And whether that ‘something’ is Mr. Edgeworth himself, the ‘accursed harbinger,’ or ‘revenants below,’ I have long planned this—and not even the ghastliest ghoul of folklore shall frighten me away.
