Journal Entry 79 - June 11th, 1886 – 12:14 a.m. [Continued]

‘It is a name to be feared,’ she confessed. ‘Even General Edgeworth himself learned to fear and respect the name of this horrid behemoth.’ I must admit that Mrs. Ramsey is an endowed story-teller; her tales are amusing—but I suspect that such myths were spread nearly a century ago to keep away the more daring fortune-seekers. Mr. Ramsey, it appeared (especially from his indifferent countenance), had heard his wife’s ghost stories one too many times. ‘I think I shall retire,’ he said, leaving abruptly. Yet Mrs. Ramsey cared not—and continued. ‘The valley,’ she said, ‘is a sinister wilderness. Nothing good ever befalls those who take its roads after sunset. Its shadow envelops all, and I sometimes feel it reaches the Staddon House. Occasionally, at one or two o’clock a.m., you might feel uneasy or restless.’
