Journal Entry 66 - June 8th, 1886 – 11:03 p.m.
Unerringly, and as I suspected, there was a hidden envelope behind the portrait. I had to be extremely careful when handling the thrice-folded and century-old parchment. At length, in the trembling candlelight, an unamusing riddle greeted me. It reads as follows: ‘A coffin rests not always beneath each headstone / Remember this when ye enter Purgatory / Upon the dark hill’s summit shall your truth be shown / Heed not this warning and find the end of your story / Yet should ye seize from his old, slumbering fingers / A map by which few mortals shall ever follow / You will see soaring high the accursed harbinger / And the revenants below shall bring forth great woe.’ Whether imaginative poetry or a sincere curse, my curiosity is piqued further.
