My nocturnal visit to Maple Hill proved incredibly unsuccessful. I told Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey that it was an irredeemable habit of mine to go for nightly strolls, and they—quite gullibly—believed my every word. Unfortunately, a thunderstorm arose over the sky as I retrieved my tools from the rotting oak. I had greased the graveyard’s back gate the evening prior, and found them to open effortlessly tonight. But as I found dear Mr. Edgeworth’s gravestone, the lightning struck down nearby, scorching a tree a few yards from one of the mausoleums. I heard a loud cracking and thud—likely a falling branch. As the violence of the wind gusts increased by the minute, I decided it was wisest to hasten back to the Staddon House.
