Journal Entry 66 - June 8th, 1886 – 10:28 p.m.
I arrived much later than anticipated and hid my shovels and prying-tool behind a dead oak half a mile from the Staddon House (and only a few yards from the narrower road that winds up to Maple Hill Cemetery). Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey are as hospitable as their endearing letters, and they were even so kind as to lecture me on their home’s lengthy history over dinner. I thought I’d nod off had their dull, rambling stories endured for any longer. At last, when the monotony of their voices subsided, I retired to my bedchamber. I have since locked my door and intend to scrutinize every inch of General Edgeworth’s ancient portrait. I have little doubt the old general will mind me doing what I must to decipher his little mystery.
