Journal Entry 63 - November 24th, 1888

The legend of ‘Mansfield’s Inn’ is commonly heard in the tavern, and I do recall casual mentions of this establishment intermittently. However, Edgar could not uncover any document that might help substantiate the inn’s presence in the valley; yet Mr. Moore had sworn to have been there, and, with much conviction, believed he had once spoken to the proprietor everyone calls ‘Mansfield.’ Now, with the unexpected disappearance of his friend, I find it harder to dismiss the inn as folklore. Outsiders may scoff at our little superstitions, but the threats that confront us each year seem less and less whimsical. In recent memory, the assailants that broke into the Staddon House and the missing historian, Mr. Holbrook, only led to further questions—and both incidents deeply trouble me every night. What ever are we to do?
