Journal Entry 59 - November 14th, 1888 - Midnight

I fell asleep briefly, but awoke after only a few moments. To my surprise, the door to my chamber was ajar. At first, I wanted to leap from my bed and flee at once, but then an uncertainty pervaded my senses. It was entirely too convenient. And I imagined Mansfield lying in wait in the hall. I hesitated and my heart raced. Very quietly, I neared the door and listened for several minutes. Only the ringing of undisturbed silence pierced my ears. I then shut the door and locked it. Was it all a trap? I deliberated over what might happen. And realizing that it could very well be my only chance to escape, I thus chose to tiptoe downstairs.
