Journal Entry 58 - May 19th, 1886
Mr. Ramsey confirmed my reservation in a letter I received this afternoon. It seems that all is falling into place. I am nearly finished reading another one of those detestable volumes of the region’s history. Surely by now—with every ounce of trivial and obscure knowledge I’ve acquired—no one will doubt my intentions. I will leave on the 5th of June. To avoid questioning, I will conceal my tools somewhere before arriving. Admittedly, the legends are unsettling, and I cannot help but believe that there exists a kernel of truth within the old fables. However, neither the living nor the dead shall infringe upon my undertakings. I have remained patient for months, and soon my scrutiny will be rewarded.
