Journal Entry 49 - October 31st, 1878

I am unable to understand that which has befallen us. I found Addy unconscious in Luella’s cottage. At first, she would not speak—and her countenance displayed utter dismay. After a few hours, she wept violently while explaining that Luella had attempted to drag her inside that hideous clock. Addy described Luella as ghastly pale and emaciated—clutching on to her arms with cadaverous fingers and claws—and screaming like a banshee as she did. Her hair, Addy says, was an admixture of black and white. It appeared as if Luella were paradoxically aged and youthful—or perhaps dead and alive. Although I would rather believe my wife had a nightmare, there are very real scratch marks upon her arms.
