Journal Entry 48 - Maple Hill Caretaker Log - June 19th, 1886 [Continued]

They all were ravenously endeavoring to reach me—their arms wriggling through the broken panes. And where was I to flee? Praying, I ascended the narrow stairs winding up to the choir loft. However, the wood of one of these steps had rotted from a leak. My foot thus fell through the plank and I collapsed. By this time, I could hear the doors crash open and more windows break. An abundance of shuffling sounds filled the chapel and began ascending the steps. After pulling my leg out, I hurried to the top and slammed the thin door—holding it shut. The knob rattled and the ghastly sighs continued. I swear I heard them sometimes utter the phrase “Please?” The mayhem did not end until the break of dawn.
