When Chester Is Near

It has never been established whether the figure known as “Chester”—with his elongated head and deep-green skin—is some unearthly being, apparition, or figment living only in dreams dreamed by the guests at Mansfield’s Inn. Yet what many travelers agree upon is that the atmosphere of the room changes from the slightest uneasiness to the most leaden heaviness—as if something is pressing down against one’s head and chest. The flames on candle and lamp wicks dim, too, as Chester appears out from the shadowed corners. The look upon his countenance is one of mild amusement and curiosity—though the true thoughts behind the perturbing man’s burning, red irises are surely far more hair-raising than what his calm demeanor suggests.
