Unnatural Pumpkins
As the first hints of autumn begin to subtly change the trees’ canopies to scarlet, gold, and ginger—and the nights and mornings grow much colder—one might observe pumpkins strewn over the hilly fields within the valley. Yet residents in Hemlock often remark on the extraordinarily monstrous appearance of these crops, believing they are likely rare variants. But others are convinced they are something else. For indeed, sometimes in rays of silver moonlight, one might witness the vines slithering through the earth as if alive—or the blackened soil palpitating as if countless beating hearts were buried underneath it. What is truly growing in that desolate vale?
