The Sheet Ghost

When one hears the word ‘ghost,’ he or she may very well imagine a floating sheet with two, cut holes that loosely resemble eyes. When did we first produce this mental archetype? Did it arise from bedsheets hanging on clotheslines in the moonlight, sometimes indistinctly taking the shape of a person? Or is it that we sometimes fancy we see faces within the folds and wrinkles of white linens? Perhaps such a question shall never be answered—although, it certainly haunted the townsfolk of Hemlock; for many believed they saw something within their drying laundry, curtains, and bedspreads. And much worse, too, were the hands reaching through the fabric, as well as protruding heads—and eyeholes with yellow gleams reflecting through.
