The Headstone of Stanwulf Ashcroft
Judge Stanwulf Ashcroft was a prominent figure in his day and an associate of Sir Norman Warwick during the first decade that the asylum opened its doors. A descendant of the venerable Ashcroft family, who were among the first settlers in the region, the judge had little trouble finding himself a respectable position within the township. Even so, others did not look upon him favorably. Behind shut doors, many speculated that Judge Ashcroft conspired with Sir Warwick, as he always seemed more than pleased to declare a defendant non compos mentis. Since his demise in 1830, grass does not grow over the earth above his coffin. And ravens have made a habit of flocking around his headstone.
