Lost Letters
Letter 90 - March 4th, 1883
Dear Rodger,
I would caution you against presuming that our sensory perceptions are the only means of ascertaining our world. If a man is insane, and he hears and sees things which we both know to be hallucinatory, does that make them any less real to him—especially if he is to follow your very principle to its fateful conclusion? If we rely on the material to demonstrate the unfailing—though invisible—actuality of, say, arithmetic, surely one could theorize the same about hauntings? A chair moves by itself and drags its legs across the floor; although the cause cannot be perceived through our five senses, the cause’s consequence is apparent. And precisely as the logician’s knowledge exists outside your conventions of epistemology, perhaps the extra-existential reality of specters does, too.
