Letter 73 - October 20th, 1897

Dear Elizabeth,

Nonsense! All of your worrying does not make you a madwoman, but someone who is fatigued and in need of rest. You are quite welcome to stay with us for as long as you must—and Fredrick, too. I will say that whatever you saw behind the mirror stirs a distant memory of mine. In the valley, there is a place for horses to drink. ‘Irving’s Pond’ is the name—although I might be misremembering. When I was a little girl, I peered into its waters. They were black, cloudy, and cold. I touched the surface with my small hand, but when I pulled it away, another hand—identical to mine—rose from its depths. I haven’t since forgotten what my impressionable eyes saw.

Love, sane or not,
Sarah
