Letter 70 - May 10th, 1842

My beloved William,

I should not be hesitant in granting your request, as I trust you won’t be too harsh in your judgement. Even so, I confess that I frequently burn my pieces upon their completion. I suppose I am never wholly content. Perchance, this drawing is one you may treasure dearly and deliver from my fiery habits! It is of a mourning dove who visits my window every day. He sometimes weeps and flies away before a thunderstorm. There is something almost angelic or preternatural about this meek fowl. I know not why he comes, nor why he sheds tears, but I find him oddly comforting—like a guardian angel whose vigil never ceases.
