Letter 66 - August 19th, 1890

Dear Dr. Joseph White,

I admire your confident sympathy—very ardently—but I advise you to remain wary. I fear that we must not arrive to hopeful conclusions too quickly, lest they be shattered by unforeseen deceptions. I have watched Victor very closely since his first day here, and his theatrical aptitude is profound. Yet when such gifts are corrupted by illusory mental states, the subtle dangers may become imperceptible. Politeness, consideration, and cooperation are not immune to mimicry; you must remember this always. Nevertheless, Victor may possibly be the companion that poor Mr. Wright needs. You are hereby permitted to move our hapless mayor to Victor’s cell.

My regards,
Jeffrey Randolph
