Journal Entry 42 - August 20th, 1850
I do not trust Samuel. Why would he write me years later? His letter was unnecessarily vague, and I cannot help but doubt its authenticity. For all I truly know, it is a well-crafted forgery. Still, I cannot help but believe that he actually is in some precarious circumstance. Yet what am I to do about it? I wrote in my response that I would meet him at Hemlock’s tavern in a week. Supposing he is in serious trouble, I may be unable to deliver him from this threat he describes. I am also anxious to hear more about his alleged discovery. But why has he been silent until now? Something is amiss. Perhaps once I have talked to him at length, I will be able to discern his intentions.
