Journal Entry 38 -
December 15th, 1847

During our final search for Samuel, I came upon the valley’s deserted mansion. The gusty snowfall stung my cheeks as I eyed the dark, vacant windows of the home. For a while, I stood behind the wrought iron gates, almost afraid to trespass beyond them. Yet I considered the possibility that he might’ve been hiding inside. Although no smoke billowed from the chimneys, I still called his name—and as anticipated, there was no response. I therefore made my way to the entrance, but the doors were well-bolted. Knowing the snowstorm would only worsen, I realized it was imperative that I left and returned to camp immediately. Still, I wonder if he was inside.
