Journal Entry 35 - Maple Hill Caretaker Log - June 6th, 1886
What a sorrowful sight this cemetery has become. The once-lush gardens are now barren and the trees seem to be in ill health. Perhaps we are overcrowded with too many residents. In the last twenty-five years that I have been caretaker, I never would’ve imagined a place of serenity and reflection could become stained by gloom. I admit that with age, I cannot weed or tend to the shrubberies as often as I used to. Burials and funerals are so scarce that I have let the chapel fall into disrepair. And I can do nothing about the headstones that are sinking into the ground. Truthfully, I am surprised the township of Hemlock has not yet ended my employment.
