Journal Entry 34 - October 27th, 1878
Poor Luella. Although she appears to be in brighter spirits than before, she becomes obsessively preoccupied with the most trivial of matters. Yet nothing can compare to her fixation on the pendulum clock. Luella swears that its appearance changes after each night. Although at first I believed this to be some delusion induced by her acute emotional anguish, I myself am beginning to notice the unusual characteristics in the clock. If I knew better, I would say that the weights now resemble three dangling bones inside. How terrible this clock is! And in the dark, its shape becomes that of a coffin leaning against the wall. It is likely that this grotesque thing reminds Luella of Jeremiah’s death. I shall see if we can rid her of it tomorrow.
