The Short-Lived Occupation of the Valley

In November of 1847, an infantry platoon of state militiamen patrolled the central roadways of the valley. After the governor had received many complaints from several postmasters throughout New England, it was decided that the dark vale’s routes were especially dangerous. However, most individuals believed that coach robbers were responsible for the missing travelers and postmen—disregarding any of the superstitious claims. In late December, the occupation ceased due to an unusually violent snowstorm; even so, many of the troops swore to have felt uneasy during the occupation, including a discomforting sense of being watched and followed.
