The Figure on the Dock

Beyond the congregations of cattails and sedges, an old, narrow dock reaches out into the black waters of Irving’s Pond. Sometimes at night, a shadowy figure with a pale face might be observed standing on the edge and staring out, as if lost within midnight contemplations. According to many tales, if a lost traveler approaches him, the apparition will ask a rather morbid riddle. If it is answered incorrectly, the figure will release a harrowing scream before dragging the unfortunate soul into the cold, murky waters. However, if the riddle is answered correctly, the phantom will give a detailed map of the valley’s roads. Thus, one must ponder the spirit’s words carefully before answering.
