Sprites of the Wetland

Indistinct, gleaming shapes stir to and fro in Hawthorne’s Bog. Faint, yet sapphire, these dazing phantoms are almost always observed from afar. But when one steps nearer, it seems as if the sprites evaporate into thin air. Perhaps this is why they are dismissed as illusions created by some unexplained natural phenomenon. Nevertheless, soft, vague voices pervade the mire when these playful wraiths manifest. ‘Una’ is a name commonly attributed to the final one; she may be seen dancing above the murky waters before expiring like a candleflame caught in a draft. Are these vivacious faeries simply fable? Or do they inhabit the damp depths of the bog?
