Ghosts or Puppets?
Sometimes residents of Hemlock must question the sanity of their very own superstitions. At night, beneath the dismal lamplight along the thoroughfare, it has been believed that the ghosts of vanished citizens will sometimes glide through the cold air. Nonetheless, those who have evidently received closer glimpses of these unquiet spirits insist they are something else; witnesses say that the eyes of the apparitions are either empty or possess inert, glass eyeballs. Furthermore, the jaws are separate from the rest of the head, and suspended strings are sewn through the hands, elbows, and feet. Thus, the undying question remains: Are they specters returning from their rest? Or are they phantastic puppets?
