A Resident of Vacant Barns

Farmers did not stay long in the valley during the late 18th century, and the long-abandoned barns—presently claimed by overgrowth—are the remnants of settlers’ short-lived agricultural aspirations. What frightened them away? Only through conjecture can one imagine. But some passerby believe they have seen a gaunt, stooping form prowl inside the slanting, decrepit structures. The figure is reputedly seven feet tall and stands upright. Glaring back, in the light of one’s lantern, a pair of eyes watch; nonetheless, many dismiss such sightings, believing that the eyes of a barn owl or moose are peering back rather than some lurking fiend.
