Letter 8 - May 6th, 1851

Dear Madeline,

I shall depart early next Tuesday. Although I am quite eager to see you, I dread having to take the road through the wilderness many call ‘Spookinite Valley.’ The last time I had traveled through that secluded vale, I heard and saw something large follow me through the forested hills. I never wish to find myself being pursued by whatever it was ever again. Something grim lives there—my soul tells me this. Perhaps it was a bear; and yet, its movements were unlike any wild creature with which I am familiar. Though my conjectures sound mad, I have no doubt about what I heard and witnessed. I will be very glad to leave Hemlock behind forever.

Truly yours,
Howard Henshaw
