Journal Entry 75 - July 25th, 1895 – 12:19 a.m. [Continued]
As I contemplated the intentions behind these odd, botanical arrangements, lantern light wound down the path—growing more radiant. I ran into the shadows beneath the trees, only to hear movements in the wet brush. I held my breath and listened, discerning many other skulking sounds over the damp leaves and chirping crickets. Onward, I leapt, only to find a tall, unscalable wrought-iron fence—its pickets sharp and spear-like. And as far as I could tell, the fence surrounded all of the land behind the manor. Retreating to the back door, I heard the lumbering noises follow. When I entered the house, I shut the door inaudibly, locked it, and returned to the antechamber. The marble bust appeared to smile grimacingly this time.
