Ghostly Poetry
The Unlit Candle
Within the delicate warmth of childhood’s noon,
I befriended an unwonted girl in June.
We played until twilight’s amber shone no more,
‘We’ll see one another tomorrow,’ we swore.
In our hideout beyond the attic’s recess,
We told wondrous tales and worried less and less.
From time to time she’d snuff out the candlelight;
‘Why do you smother our only means of sight?’
‘The flame,’ she answered, ‘will wane both wax and wick.’
‘All candles burn out,’ I said, holding a matchstick.
But evening fell fast and she could play no more;
‘We’ll see one another tomorrow,’ we swore.
Yet the weeks endured and she grew sick and unwell.
‘Clara is nearing the end,’ her mother did tell.
My friend’s endearing smile fled from her lips,
My life, her surmounting absence did thence eclipse.
Then one night her small heart beat no more,
‘I’ll never light a candle again,’ I swore.
