Skelton the Skeleton

Admired by many, he burned with zeal.
Yet his untimely fate someone did seal.
Noble and chivalrous, yet quite mortal.
Jealousy and wrath opened death’s portal.

His brother crept away and made a deal;
Dominion, wealth, and glory, he would steal.
Forgeries and deceit; the poor soul fell.
Soon, no one believed he was ever well.

Such great betrayal did the inmate feel.
Alone, in the dark, he could hardly kneel.
Illness thus came, and he ate less and less.
But his cold brother would dare not confess.

Many years elapsed since the inmate died.
Half-past midnight, his brother always sighed.
He fancied himself a man of reason
Who feared not the changing of each season.

Ah, but someone soon learned that he had lied.
And from the past, no longer could he hide.
For the seeds of darkness had long been sown.
Indeed, the brother would see what had grown.

In the veiled judge, weeping, he would confide.
By the sacred codes, he did not abide.
Thrown in a cell, he sees a skeleton;
Now growing quite mad, he sees dear Skelton.
