Bedside Visitation

Well beyond the stroke of twelve, you stir, turn, and rise;
‘A dream, I do wonder?’ you sleepily surmise.
Yet something in the chamber feels rather amiss;
‘No one could’ve been here,’ you hastily dismiss.

All the old furnishings are arranged quite the same,
But something is not right; what ever is to blame?
Then you notice an empty chair facing the bedside,
While you are pulled far back in by the dreaded dream-tide.

‘Someone was there,’ you thus whisper nervously.
‘Now where has he gone?’ you ask—ponderously.
All is much too quiet; but are you by yourself?
Why don’t you read the guestbook, resting on that shelf?

‘I awoke to him sitting there,’ wrote someone decades prior.
‘I shall leave at once,’ he penned, ‘for these matters are too dire.’
Suddenly, upon your door, there is a knock—
And with such fright, you recall—there is no lock.

Soon, however, you wake from your odious nightmare.
Though deeply, you feel the watcher is hiding—somewhere.
‘Dream or visitation,’ you reason, ‘I must leave at once;
‘It is surely me that this fearsome apparition hunts.’

Whether a fleeting figment or residing revenant,
He dwells in these dark rooms, with a presence ever-imminent.
Doubting not his pervasive existence—
‘You must leave!’ your thoughts warn with persistence.

You tip-toe out of bed—your heart pounding against your chest;
This will be your last chance to depart this place of unrest.
Through the hideous halls and down the steep stairs,
You take flight, seeing him sitting in the chairs.

‘Is he real?’ you question, ‘Why does this shade always watch me?’
Then, at last, you push through the doors believing you are free.
Even so, your mare is missing from the carriage house—
Quietly, you search and search—like an apprehensive mouse.

‘They do not wish for me to leave,’ you now understand.
‘What is it of me that they might possibly demand?’
But as you scurry back outside, you receive of a glimpse of him
Watching from your bedchamber’s window in candlelight so dim:

A tall head and long, green face—and eyes with irises blood-red
Peer into your soul while he smiles with a smile half-dead.
